How to Talk to Your Parent About Getting In-Home Care

Back to Resources

Telling a parent they need help is one of the hardest conversations a family can have. Most aging adults value their independence deeply, and the suggestion of in-home care can feel like a loss. But approached with empathy and the right framing, this conversation can lead to a better quality of life for everyone.

Start with Observation, Not Instruction

Instead of saying "You need help," try "I've noticed you seem tired after cooking dinner" or "I worry about you managing the stairs alone." Leading with what you've observed feels less like a judgment and more like concern.

Frame It as Support, Not Replacement

Many seniors resist care because they hear "You can't do this anymore." Reframe it: "I want to make sure you can keep living here comfortably" or "Having someone help with the things you don't enjoy frees you up for the things you do."

Involve Them in the Decision

People accept change more readily when they feel in control. Let your parent help choose their caregiver, set the schedule, and define what help they want. At Sonoran Family Concierge, we always involve the care recipient in the planning process.

Start Small

You don't have to go from zero to full-time care. Start with a few hours of companionship or light help around the house. Once your parent experiences the relief of having support, they often become more open to expanding care.

Bring in a Trusted Voice

Sometimes a parent hears "you need help" differently from a doctor, a close friend, or a sibling than from an adult child. If the conversation stalls, consider asking someone your parent trusts and respects to share their perspective.

Be Patient

This conversation rarely happens once. It's a process. Plant the seed, give your parent time to think, and revisit it gently. The goal isn't to win an argument — it's to help your loved one live safely and comfortably for as long as possible.
